Like the unexpected fire of a sunset, or the flash of autumn leaves, Carnelian captivates. A glassy, translucent stone, Carnelian is an orange-colored variety of Chalcedony, a mineral of the Quartz family. Its color varies from pale pinkish-orange to a deep rusty brown, though it is most known for its brilliant orange and red-orange crystals. Some of the most beautiful and gemmy carnelian in the world comes from the foothills of the Cascade Mountains in Washington state, like this lovely small nodule. The face is bands of butterscotch and orange, with a large quartz crystal center. This nodule was naturally broken to display the face, and I lightlly polished the banding to bring out the glow of the carnelian. There are some darker mineral crystals adhering to the quartz... possibly iron which is what gives carnelian its color but I don't really know. This treasure of the earth is a perfect gift for nature lovers. It fits wonderfully into a home based on eco decor. It can be used for a curio on the shelf, or as nice addition to a rock collection. It would make a good palm stone for healing and chakra work. It is especially nice in a window as the light shines through the translucent carnelian beautifully. Carnelian Healing Properties Carnelian is an energy booster. Carnelian restores vitality and motivation, and stimulates creativity. It gives courage and promotes positive life choices helping the insecure person to trust yourself and your perceptions. It sharpens concentration. In a physical healing context, it is said to accelerate the healing process. Carnelian is a second chakra stone due to its orange hue, which connects it with easing lower back pain and the kidneys. Carnelian Mineral History Carnelian is a sedimentary deposit of silica in a pocket, gas bubble or amygdule cavity. The cavities in which carnelian grows in are volcanic in nature. The red coloration in carnelian occurs from a combination of iron inclusions in the chalcedony and exposure to heat & UV radiation.
